About the Event
Join PNN and the Public Banking Coalition as we make some "good trouble" at City Hall on October 7th to put City Council and Mayoral candidates on notice that we expect them to fully support the funding and operation of a Philadelphia Public Bank.
Last March we succeeded in getting City Council to pass an ordinance directing the Mayor to create the precursor to a public bank, the Philadelphia Public Financing Authority. The bill passed by a 15-1 margin and the Mayor failed to veto it, letting it become law. But then he did an amazing thing. He thumbed his nose at the ordinance and declared, with no legal justification, that he would just ignore it, and defy the democratic process by which it passed.
We cannot accept that kind of law-breaking whether by a President of the United States, or the Mayor of our City. That’s why at noon on October 7th we will gather at the Northeast corner of City Hall to read a list of charges against the Mayor. At the same time we will be sending a delegation to his office to deliver a “People’s Subpoena.” The Subpoena will command him to show cause why he shouldn’t be held in contempt of the people of this City for ignoring the mandate of City Council to create the Authority.
We need you to show up and let the Mayor know we mean business!
