A Tale of Two District Attorneys

As bad as Philadelphia’s homicide rate was in 2022 with 32 deaths*, it was actually dwarfted by the rate of 49 deaths* in York, PA.  In Harrisburg, Republican legislators were so outraged by Philadelphia’s high homicide rate that they decided to impeach Philadelphia’s District Attorney, Larry Krasner for misfeasance while in office.  The state Republican Party, however, opted to grace York’s district attorney, Dave Sunday, with an endorsement to be the next Attorney General in Pennsylvania.

And while no one has offered any praise to Krasner for the precipitous decline in gun violence in the city, Dave Sunday has made such a reduction the hallmark of his success as the York County DA.

Sunday cites his membership in the Group Violence Initiative (GVI), a multi-disciplinary task force, for the reduction of gun violence in the city.  There is little doubt that such programs work, as evidenced by similar outcomes in cities such as Chester, PA.  But the success of these programs is also hampered by how often firearms end up in the hands of bad actors.

There is solid evidence that a relationship exists between lax gun laws and gun violence.  But Sunday has repeatedly skirted answering questions regarding the enforcement of laws already on the books.  He has also been endorsed by the Gun Owners of America, an organization that bills itself to the right of the NRA with regard to firearm regulation.  Spotlight PA has reported that Val Finnell, GOA Pennsylvania’s legislative director, has written that Sunday’s returned questionnaire to the group has led him to “say with confidence that [Sunday] is AGAINST Universal Registration Checks and Red Flag Gun Confiscation Orders.”

Sunday’s opponent in this race is Eugene DePasquale, who has been endorsed by the Gifford’s Law Center, the Guardian Civic League, the PA Correctional Officers Association, and the Teamsters Law Enforcement League, as well as Planned Parenthood, Conservation Voters, and a slew of other unions and organizations.

Below are some ways you can help him, and other candidates as well.

Canvass: If you can make any one of the following canvasses, that would be great.

Please sign up to canvass Saturday (10/26 @ 11am)   Carpool leaves High Point Allens Lane at 10 am and canvass begins at 11 am.

Sunday, October 27 – Brian Munroe and the whole Dem ticket.  Brian narrowly flipped the district two years ago.  He has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood, Conservation Voters, and Pennsylvania’s AFL-CIO.  We are going early so we can finish by the Eagles’ start at 1pm.  Carpool at High Point at 10 and canvass at 11 am.  Please sign up to canvass Sunday (10/27 @ 10 am)

Tuesday, October 29  – Sean Dougherty needs our help to hold a state legislative seat in NE Philly.  Canvass starts at noon on Tuesday, October 29.  We will carpool from High Point Allens Lane at 11.  Sign up to canvass for Doughery Tuesday (10/29) or Friday (11/1) at noon.

Phone Bank: Phone bank for Jim Wertz, on Wednesday, 5 – 7.  Jim is a teacher, who believes that we need to defend democracy, protect abortion, respect workers’ rights, and fund education.  In addition to incumbent Dan Laughlin’s dubious self-promotion as a champion of public education, he has also signed a letter in support of the Texas lawsuit against Pennsylvania’s 2020 election.  And, Conservation Voters gave Laughlin a 0% rating in its most recent report card.  Need any other reasons to support Jim?  You can sign up here to phone bank for him.
