PNN Newsletter: All-Hands Meeting, Toy Drive, More

PNN’s mission is to engage, educate and empower our neighbors to make our City a better place to live. Here’s what’s coming up in each of these areas:

  • Engage: All-Hands Meeting in January

  • Educate: Join a Planning Team

  • Empower: Christmas Toy Drive

Member Appreciation Party Redux

A fun time was had by all at our Member Appreciation Party! We shared some great food and conversation (thanks, Chef Kurt!), had some laughs at the crazy answers to "Two Truths & a Lie" (thanks, TBah!), and crowned new Beanbag Toss Champions (congrats to Joe Bakovsky and Nate Holt!).

We also heard from two of our trusted elected allies about what to expect in the coming year and what they intend to do about it. Rep Rabb and D.A. Krasner did not mince words in their analysis of the treacherous waters we will have to navigate in 2025, but they also left us feeling a bit better about our prospects with their never-say-die, spit-in-their-eye convictions.

The photo montage is from the party. We'll post more soon online.

Arena in Chinatown Update

The Arena has been approved in Committee by an 11-4 vote, with Gauthier, Landau, O’Rourke and Young, Jr. voting no. Thomas and Brooks weren’t present for the vote. The final vote will take place at the Council session on December 19th. We'll keep you abreast of plans the Arena Coalition has for continuing the fight to stop this arena from taking over Chinatown.

Support Our Annual Toy Drive!

Now Until December 20th

This marks the third year that Philly Neighborhood Networks is working with Free the Ballot and others to help bring a little holiday joy to kids who have an incarcerated parent.  We will be providing toys and clothes (pajamas, socks, coats) to children 0-13 years of age this Christmas. Our allies will be collecting toys until Dec 20th at the following locations:

  • Mother Zoar African United Methodist Church, 3259 North Broad St (Questions: Call Gail at 267-259-4038 or call ahead to 215-225-2827)

  • Roxborough Church, 8230 Ridge Ave, Welcome Center entrance (Questions: Call Ashley at 267-636-2467 )

Join a Planning Team

We expect that the trump regime will aggressively implement policies that will have grave consequences for members of our community, likely starting with our most vulnerable. We won't know some things until they roll out, but we can make some good guesses at what they will be. We're anticipating an early-January prep call. If you'd like to be a part of this work, then use the link below.

All-Hands Meeting in January

Saturday, January 25th, 2-4PM, Germantown Life Enrichment Center (GLEC)

Please mark your calendar! You want to be a part of this in-person meeting at GLEC, located at 5722 Greene Street, so that we can reflect on the first week of chaos from the trump administration, and offer some plans to respond together as a team. Planning continues and we'll keep you updated.

We’ll also report on work already underway on local campaigns that can put us on the offensive right here in Philly against the billionaire class that Trump is fronting for. And we will share ideas that we and our allies are developing to strengthen our connections to communities around the city, both to lift them up, and to open up more impactful ways to build interest in voting. We'll keep you updated.

This Week in History

Dec 14, 2012 – Sandy Hook.  Twenty children and six employees were murdered by a former student with known mental health problems, prompting an unsuccessful attempt by President Obama to impose background checks.

Dec 15, 1791 – Bill of Rights Becomes Law. On this day, the first ten amendments to the Constitution were ratified. These laws were designed to protect the basic rights of U.S. citizens, guaranteeing the freedom of speech, press, assembly, religion, and the right to fair legal procedure.

Thanks for your activism!
