PNN Newsletter: Elections, Projections, Protections, Philly's Future and More

PNN’s mission is to engage, educate and empower our neighbors to make our City a better place to live. Here’s what’s coming up in each of these areas:

  • Engage: 18 Days Until Election Day - Do Your Part: Canvass, Events & Postcards!

  • Educate: Interview with Erin McClelland, Chinatown Health Problem

  • Empower: Project Your Vote, Get On the Bus

Want to Help Get Out the Vote (GOTV)?

Canvassing is completed in phases: The first phase came this summer when we knocked on doors to have Persuasion conversations with our neighbors; then came Persuasion-Mobilization, just after Labor Day thru when mail ballots begin to arrive, convincing folks to get registered and to vote early by mail.

Next week, we will enter the final phase of canvassing - GOTV. Our job will be to talk with those folks who said they would vote, or applied for a mail-in ballot (we keep track of this), to have a final conversation that reaffirms their commitment to vote and helps them make a plan.

We have been asked by our State Partner America Votes to canvass in Ward 9 in West Mt. Airy, then move to Wards 11, 13 and 17, in Germantown and North Philly. We will be at the doors every day until Election Day.

If you would like to help with this work, click on the link below and then click the GET OUT THE VOTE link at the bottom of the form to let us know that you're ready to help!

Last Chance to Join Our PNN Postcard Campaign!

There are 18 days left until the Election. So far, more than 200 volunteers have written 5,000 postcards. That's amazing! And there are a few more opportunities for you to sign up for a postcard writing event. It’s fun, effective, and we’re reaching voters to increase the turnout. It’s now or never! Let’s step to do our part to bring victory home.

Opinion: Chinatown Areas Creates a Health Problem

Walter Tsou is a long-time PNN Steering Committee member, and former City Health Commissioner, so his opinion on health matters carries weight. Walter created a simple but powerful video opposing the construction of the Sixers arena in Chinatown on public health grounds. Check it out.

Get on the Bus - Election Day GOTV

Tuesday, November 5, Various Shifts All Day

Spike Lee fans will remember the movie "Get On the Bus" about the iconic Million Man March that took place in Washington in 1995 to unite in self-help and self-defense against economic and social ills plaguing the African-American community.

In homage to that work, Philly Neighborhood Networks will be renting a 27-passanger bus to travel around neighborhoods in North Philly and Germantown to encourage neighbors to Get On the Bus to their Polling Place. We'll establish a bus route thru these wards that stops at all the polling locations.

We are still in the planning phase for this and need help pulling together the logistics for it, but if you're willing to step up, we can provide some financial reward on top of a really big "thank you!" Want to help? Send an email to Tim Brown with the title "Get On the Bus".
